Bay Parking - OMG!

04 February 2008, 11:19am

Cheap Girls Car InsuranceSo what’s a good plan for getting it right?

Well there are 2 key aspects to safely parking in a bay:
Ø Good technique
Ø Confidence

Firstly, any sort of controlled manoeuvre in a confined space requires good accelerator, brake and clutch control.

One great way of building these skills is to find a large space where you can practice safely. Supermarket and other large public car parks are always a good option, especially at tea-time on a Sunday when the shops are closed and most people are at home.

This is when there are huge areas and it’s safe to practice.
Car parks are especially good because they are already set out with lines and bays so its easier to set up a dummy space to work with.

Large cardboard boxes are a great idea for defining corners of other cars, they fold flat for transport but can be opened up and positioned so that the space is as small or as large as you want it to be.

Get used to knowing how close you can get to another object without hitting it. A big cardboard box allows you to experiment safely. Try going as close as you dare without hitting and then get out of the car to see how close you actually are.

Remember, when it comes to your test, your examiner will consider safety and control as being top priorities as well as general awareness of others - especially pedestrians and children. S/he will expect you not to cross or park on any of the lines defining the bay.

You can get more instruction and see a video of how to safely complete a bay parking manoeuvre at www.2pass.co.uk/bayparking_left.htm

Practice doesn’t in itself make perfect but practicing the right things does! And it builds confidence. Remember, being able to do something in a relaxed mode is different to doing the same thing under pressure so confidence building is a must.

Once you have all the basic elements right, repeat the successful manoeuvre over and over until its 2nd nature. Use the cardboard boxes to make the bay smaller and more difficult to get into.

Once you have mastered a really tight space the driving test bay will be a simple matter and will look huge!

Young Lady Driver strongly promotes motor insurance for Learner and new drivers, encouraging everyone to quickly get their own No Claims Discounts.

New starters can get a 6 month policy with YLD and so long as there are no claims after 6 months, they will get an equivalent of 12 months No Claims Discount when renewing the policy.
This is a really cost effective and affordable way of getting on the insurance ladder without risking Mum or Dad’s insurance policy.

Click the website button for a free call-back to discover how Young Lady Driver can set you on the road to driving independence.
