Do Your SHADES put you at risk?

08 September 2008, 10:11am

Cheap Girls Car InsuranceDo Your SHADES put you at risk?

Well first – we need some sunshine and then we can see what’s what.

But seriously, the fact is that a report in the Daily Mail suggested that “Twelve million fashion-conscious women drivers are risking their lives by wearing sunglasses which limit their view of the road”.

Research shows that many of Britain's 14.4million female motorists admit to putting style before safety yet road safety experts say they should avoid the fashionable wide-armed variety of sunglasses worn by the celebs - as well as those with pink or very dark lenses.

Kylie Minogue, Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham can all be seen in their designer frames but the Eyecare Trust charity advises women to make safety their first priority with sunglasses for driving.

The Daily Mail goes on to report “More than eight out of ten women (82 per cent) surveyed failed to consider safety when choosing sunglasses for driving - equivalent to 11.8million female motorists. One in ten - 1.3million - drive in wide-armed glasses that severely restrict their peripheral vision. A further 7 per cent wear lenses that are so dark they are illegal for driving.”

Wide arms and dark lenses may look cool but the glamour wears off quickly if anything goes wrong. Pink tinted lenses can make it difficult to read road signs or spot hazards by distorting colours and wide-armed glasses create blind spots.

Recommended styles are Aviator type glasses that curve around the eyes and have slim arms with anti-reflective lenses coloured in neutral brown or grey shades. Motorists need good all-round vision and a visual span of at least 120 degrees; the lens colour, filter strength, frame size, and various other lens coatings can all play a part in determining whether your sunglasses are roadworthy or not.

Young Lady Drivers always want to look their best when behind the wheel but there’s little point in risking your hard earned no claims discount by failing to see another vehicle.

If you’re concerned about your eyesight or your shades, we recommend talking to a good local optician who should be able to advise the best solution.
And if you’re looking for the best in car insurance, we recommend you talk to Young Lady Driver!

Get a quick quote here online or call us free on 0800 581 414 – our professional insurance team can guide you through all the options to make sure you get the right policy at the right price.

Sadly, we can’t guarantee the sunshine!
